Are you not seeing results in your workplace or team? Does your organization feel stuck? This quote helped me process why I was not getting results.
In Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni shares a quote from an executive who built a start-up into a billion-dollar company: “If you could get all the people in an organization rowing in the same direction, you could dominate any industry, in any market, against any competition, at any time.”
Dominate any time? Really?
It reminds me of the passage from Acts 4:32: “All the believers were one in heart and mind.” The early church exploded in growth because they were in one heart and mind. There are over 2 billion professing Christians. It started with a small group of men and women 2000 years ago.
How were they able to achieve this result? Vision. They had a unifying vision from Jesus (the Great Commission and Great Commandment). This is why Jesus prays for unity among the believers with God (John 17). There is something powerful that happens when we are united together. It creates synergy. Synergy is seeing exponential results. Typically, 1 + 1 = 2. However, when you have a common vision, synergy says, 1 + 1 = 3. When you are united with others for a Christ-centered vision, then you have explosive growth.
Results may not be showing up in your life or organization because there is a lack of vision. Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish…” (KJV). If people do not have a clear and understandable vision then they will do what they think is best. When there is a clear direction then it allows people to work together to build something bigger than themselves. There is a shared goal and it becomes more like a team.
Do you have a clearly defined vision and direction for your job? How about for your health, finances, and family?
Here are some questions to help you process your vision for any aspect of your life.
- What are your core values? These are guiding principles for you and the organization.
- What is your mission/ vision statement or core business? It’s why you exist and your focus.
- What is your long-term target (10-year goal)? Where do you see your family a decade from now? This is what every person on the team is working toward. It helps the organization know that they are heading in the right direction.
- What is your plan to communicate that vision with your team?
These are a few questions to get you started on the process. Once you can drill down on these questions then the next part would be to drill down even further with short-term goals (1 year) along with keeping track of your progress.
Results do not happen by accident. It’s an intentional process that requires vision and living out that vision.
